Hardiness Zones are good guidelines as to whether or not a plant will overwinter in your area. If you are in a very cold zone such as zones 0-3, even hardy perennials such as hostas, daylilies, or phlox may not survive your winters outside.Tender bulbs have to be dug and stored inside for the winter in almost all of Canada (north of zone 8).Talk to local gardeners or your local Dept. of Agriculture for information on local conditions. To find out which zone your garden is in go to our web-site at www.veseys.com Click on ‘Information for Gardeners’, then click on “Growing zones”. Our web-site contains lots of detailed gardening information. Happy Gardening!

Hardy Bulbs and Perennials can remain in the ground permanently if they are hardy in your zone. They will increase in size each year and may have to be divided in 3 to 5 years. All perennial plantings (especially new ones) benefit greatly from being covered with mulch (evergreen boughs or straw) after the ground freezes in the fall. Hardy varieties can be planted outside as soon as you receive them and your soil has dried up enough to work with in the spring. Improve your soil by working in manure, peat moss or compost.

Tender Bulbs, such as Gladiolus, Anemones, Fairy Lilies,Dahlias, and Callas should not be planted outside until after spring frosts are past. You can start growing them inside earlier, in pots if you wish. Fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer. These tender bulbs must be removed in the fall and stored inside until next spring. Before hard fall frosts, dig up tender bulbs, shake off soil and allow them to cure in a warmish, airy place for 2 weeks. Cut off leaves and stems and store in a cool, but frost free, dry place for the winter.

Well-drained soil is essential for the successful growth of most plants, especially bulbs. If your soil tends to be usually soggy and doesn’t drain well after a rain, improve the drainage by adding peat moss, compost or manure and/or raising the level of the soil by at least 2”. All plants require regular watering during dry spells, especially until they get established.
