  My hostas are about 4 years old and growing well. This year, all the early leaves that appeared cracked and split for some reason. They've never done this before and I've noticed my neighbours have the same problem. I thought they were getting sufficient water. They are still flowering and the newer leaves seem fine. Any suggestions about what went wrong? I'm in southern Ontario, Canada and have a west facing garden. Thanks so much!

    I am being bombarded with slugs and snails this year and would like to know what I could use that is inviroment friendly that would keep them under control.

    I sprinkle diatomaceous earth all around and directly on my hostas. Veseys sells it on their website and in their catalogue. It works great to keep the slugs away from hostas and it is environmently friendly. Vesey's Product No's. 85544 and 85545.

    Crushed up egg shells sprinkled around works too.

    I have used recycled old asphalt roof tiles under my hosta, to keep the slugs at bay. Place the rough side up. They won't crawl over any kind of rough surface so it helps deter them very well. I also lay the tiles in my pathways and just cover over with mulch. It cuts down on the weeding.

    Hi Kelly Aside from the slugs they may be getting too much sun if they are in a west facing site unless they are shaded by trees. Also if there was heavy hard rain early in the seAson this may have damaged the leaves as well. Mine look awful right now, a combination of damage from the rain, hail, earwigs and slugs. Even the thicker leaved ones that are supposed to be resistant look bad. Hopefully next year will be better.
