I was surprised to learn that there is a small tomato like berry that grows within the chinese lantens. Are these little berries eatable?

Chinese Lanterns are also known as Winter Cherries. So far as I can find out, they are only good for winter decorations. You can peel them open by sections and expose the 'cherry', too.

But take note - Chinese Lanterns are VERY invasive.
