I have had 2 beautiful mandevillas in large pots with trellises so far this summer, but in the past 2 weeks the red one has had both the foliage and flowers (THEY were abundant) dry out, wither, die back. It has been kept watered, fertilized one time a month 10-30-10 (Bloom Plus). After its decline, a few days ago I decided to re-pot it, and change the soil to a non-fertilized soil that would drain fast. In re-potting, I observed that the root system looked extremely healthy, totally unlike the foliage and flowers. Meanwhile, the pink mandevilla with the same care continues to go gang busters. They both have full direct sun from sunrise until about 5 pm, the pink one has sun another couple of hours in the evening, probably. I'm at a loss. Thank you, Charlie
