Gardeners’ Forum: “flowers that will grow through ground cover”
Back to Gardeners’ Forumflowers that will grow through ground cover
Posted by Allison Friars on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 9:51 pm ADTI have a strip of garden that gets a lot of sun but I don't have time to tend it and it gets really weed-y. Would a ground cover take care of the weeds? Is there a flower hardy enough to push through it? Im a novice having fun!

Posted by Ferne on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 9:53 am ASTThere are ground covers that will REDUCE the amount of weeds that will come up but you should clean out all existing weeds thoroughly before you plant your ground covers....Dig, dig, dig....OR....cover the area with layers of newspaper or plastic for one season and THEN plant whatever you like. A new groundcover can't be expected to keep well rooted weeds from coming up and if you don't take out established or perennial weeds FIRST they will be MORE difficult to get out after you plant your ground covers. Taller perennials will come up through LOW ground covers just fine. Favourite ground covers for hot sunny locations? A TRAILING baby's breath is one of the best. Comes in white or pink. My white is much faster spreading though. Ajuga works in hot sun for me but must be watered well. It is aggressive, so not suitable for small beds, near lawn, a veggie garden or other areas because it will be difficult to keep it from spreading into nearby areas. Another solution would be to plant something larger that is care free and will fill in fast so that most weeds won't do well. Daylilies planted fairly close in a narrow area should do very well and could within a couple of years fill in the whole area. They are the most trouble free of any perennial, thrive on sun, aren't fussy about watering, and will bloom for a fair length of time in many cases. You might want to mix more than one type for variety.
ground cover for bank
Posted by Shirley Burnett on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 4:52 pm ADTWe have a bank that is too steep to mow but my husband would take care of the grass using a trimmer. He is no longer able to do that & we would like to cover it with a ground cover. Would appreciate any suggestions of ground cover & what might be needed to prepare & plant. Thank you
