Foxtail Lily (SF)
Zone 5 with protection.
Eremurus
Prefers full sun and protection from wind. Plant 18"-24" apart in a rich, well-drained soil, in groups of 3 to 5. Dig a hole 24" deep and form a cone of soil in the center. Cover with a layer of sand or fine gravel to provide perfect drainage. Spread the clump of tuberous roots so the crown rests on the cone and the top of the crown is 6" from the top of the hole. Fill in with soil. Because they are so tall, you may need to stake them in windy situations. A winter mulch is helpful. Foxtail lilies do not divide or transplant successfully; a planting can be left undisturbed for 10-15 years.
