I have brought my canna lilies upstairs to start the growing season and they seem tohave tiny clear insects on them and my leaves are starting to wilt and die. What can I do to save them.

I hope I'm not too late. I think they are aphids. Squash them with your fingers, or use insecticidal soap.

I am planting canna lily's for the first time this year the bulbs were given to me. I'm wondering if I need special soil and do I also need lime in the soil or is it not necessary. Also do you plant one large bulb or do you open it up to seperate and plant ? thank you

I got some canna lily bulbs that need to be planted but I'm not sure which way is up. Someone told me I have to plant them on their sides. Can someone help please?

If the bulbs you got have started to grow you shoud see little eyes/points starting on them. Start them with the eyes pointing up. Otherwise just lie them flat and plant. no real worry they will always turn towards the light.

I have the same question as Linda. What do you do with Cannas over the winter. We live on the north shore of Lake Superior so will the answer vary depending on which region you live in? If they have to come out what do I do with them?

I am wondering about winter survival in the ground. I have already had frost to -8 for 3 nights now and will be running out of time to bring them in if I need too. Can the bulbs in the ground be insulated with straw or silage for the winter? I believe I am a zone 2 right on the Alberta/Saskatchewan border south of Lloydminster.

Shannon, I am also in Lloydminster. I brought my canna lily in just last weekend so I'm sure yours will be fine. Be sure to clear off all the soil, let them dry out and store in a paper bag. It's a pain but it will be worth it.

HI, I brought the rhizomes for my cannas in last fall. I've kept them in a paper bag in a cool place. Can I plant them indoors to get them started now? It is the end of March. I'm hoping to have some flowers by mid June. Any takers?

I have kept the bulbs in a paper bag in the basement, like I did successfully previous years. However, I am moving in July, so I do not want to plant them. Can I keep them in the paper bag in the basement all summer and then all winter again? Or should I try planting them in urns, that I will then try to move with me in July ?

DO THEY SURVIVE CANADIAN WINTERS? DO I HAVE TO TAKE THE BULBS OUT OR CAN I LEAVE THEM IN THE GROUND? DO THEY NEED FULL SADE OR PARTIAL SUN. HOW DO YOU STORE THE BULBS IF YOU TAKE THEM OUT OF THE GROUND FOR THE WINTER. WHEN DO YOU REPLANT THEM IN THE SPRING.

If u live in zone 5 or lower u must dig them up and let dry for a day or so. Cut off the roots and the stem to 1 inch and store in a box in a dark place w/peat moss w/some pearlite or even dog bedding in temperatures of 45 degrees F and take out in the spring??April or June and replant.

I wanted to say that Ilive in Dallas, Tex and did not know I can start my canna inside. How deep a pot do I use to plant them in if I want to keep them inside. Also, I found peach colored cannas in Dallas at Home Depot. If the lady wants to know and she may be able to order them from Home Depot. Also, being in Dallss , I leave my Cannas in all winter even though we have temps in the 20's and they just pop right back up in the spring. I bought a red one this year and also a peony. I wondered if I can plant them now outside if the temp in moderate. thanks Bea

I was given some canna lily seeds about 3 years ago and planted them in a pot. As I don't have a garden they are inside. They produced about 4 shoots which have now grown up to about 3 ft high and this year is the first time any flowers have been produced, but I have the same problem as 'laurie' the leaves are slowly turning brown. Can anyone tell me what the problem is please.

I have had red ganna lillies with green leaves for years. I dig them up in the fall and replant in the spring. This year two of my bulbs grew with red leaves and now have bloomed with orange flowers instead of red. Is this something that happens to old bulbs?

I live in Ontario, and, this year. for the first time, I did not take in the bulbs, but, left them in the ground. As yet, and today is July 3/11, there are no signs of them poking through the soil. I know they are usually in bloom in August, am I rushing them a little?
