Hi: I have 2 Holly bushes that were given to me. They aren't doing very well and I would like to prune them but I am not sure how much to cut off or if I should just leave them as is. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Does holly bush need to be trimmed? The bush I have is about 7 feet high. Thank you

There are Evergreen Holly and deciduous Holly (also known as winterberry) They grow in wet swampy ground, in ordinary soil and loose their leaves. Cut back lower branches any time to keep the ground clear and to add some compost or manure once every year. Prune in early spring. The spiny evergreen kind can be trimmed in fall and winter for use in Christmas decorations etc. Some are hardy here, some are not. To get berries to form you must have a male and female plant, next to each other.
