Gardeners’ Forum: “Bulbs for Christmas??”
Back to Gardeners’ ForumBulbs for Christmas??
Posted by Stephen on Sunday, December 7, 2008 6:28 PM ASTTwo of my aunts each have really nice wildflower/perennial gardens, and I'd like my mother to have the same. I would really like to "get her one" for Christmas, but I obviously know that you don't just pick up a flower garden in the mall. I was wondering if I could buy her bulbs for Christmas. Is it too late for them, though? She lives in Michigan, with some pretty cold winters. The ground is frozen by now, so she wouldn't be able to plant them in the ground until Spring. I'm not real familiar with bulbs/gardening, but I wonder if it's still workable... Can she put them in the freezer for winter and then plant them in the Spring? Does that mean that they wouldn't bloom until the Following year?? (I don't like that idea). I was also wondering if maybe she could pot them in some plastic pots and stick them out in their barn/garage for the winter months and then transplant them once the ground softens up... Ideally, my Christmas gift to her would be a box that she can open full of all the ingredients and the BASIC know-how for producing a perennial flower/wildflower garden for Spring/Summer 2009. ANY IDEAS? Thanks!!

However bulbs won't be shipped until the spring for spring planting ( they will produce the same year) seeds can be shipped now, so maybe order some annuals and perenials, vesey's also has a wildflower section. You could also include a gift certificate so she could order some bulbs later. And there are hundreds of books available for different types of gardens and for different levels of experience. Hope this gives you some ideas.
