  I wanted to know if I can cut the tops of my tomatoe plants. They are growing way too tall already and there is still snow on the ground here. Zone 3

    hey bo. it depends on what type you have. determinate or indeterminate. indeterminate plants you should not top.if they get to tall and leggy when you do plant them in the garden take off all but the top few sets of leaves and plant them in a trench. in other words dig a trench and lay the plant in the trench covering it with soil. the plant will grow roots all along the stem supplying water and food more efficently to the plant resulting in earlier and possibly a higher yield. the deteminate type should not be topped either but it will not have a big affect on it as it will branch out more. hope this was helpfull. good luck and happy gardening.

    Hi Bo, get some taller pots and replant them deep for now. you can also get a fan going on them and this will help strengthen the stems.

    I have hooked up a fan, but my problem now is that winter has come back (15cm of snow yesterday). I am concerned now because the plants are now taller than the maximum of the lights, so some of the leaves are soon to be touching the lights. I always trench the tomatoes, and found that very helpful. They bend back straight up in a day or 2. I started 4 types of tomatoes: Roma VF (tallest problem); Big Beef; Golden Girl; Ildi; Golden Cherry (next tallest). By the way...EVERY seed sprouted and I mean every single seed, thanks Veseys.
