Posted by Suzanne on Friday, May 22, 2009 6:38 PM ADTI have 4 beautiful matured peonies plant. Every year, they bring beautiful flowers. Now I have had these plants for over 6 years - never any problems - They we're just short of blooming... I went away for a few days - came home - my husband announced that something ate all my buds off my peonies. Now, they have actually been chewed off at the buds - the plants stayed intact and are not tramped on. Other than my husband snipping them (lol) which I asked him - because that's what they look like. I do live in the country - does deer like peonies?? Any answers to this mystery - would be appreciated. Suzanne Brighton Ontario

They are small and almost a neon green when they are in their nymph stage and then turn a brown with a harder body as they turn into adults. They are famous for "Clipping" blooms and leaves off. They also make the leaves a bit "tarnished" like a yellowy/browny flecks in the leaves. I can find them usually by giving the plant a quick shake and then look at the soil to see if there are any little bugs walking around. That is the only thing that I can think of right off the bat, and I have no idea if deer will munch on peonies.... we don't have any deer here ( PEI). Good luck!
