Posted by Megan on Sunday, June 28, 2009 10:35 PM ADTHi, I was just wondering if anyone has had good luck with floating row covers... mainly I am thinking for my cole crops. Do they need to be staked up a bit off the plant, or do they just lay on the plants. Do you have to have all the edges tucked right in the ground or could I just put a few rocks around the edge to hold it down? Also, do you find that you need to water the plants under it more? I was thinking about getting a soaker hose and leaving it in place next to the plants all summmer? Someone also told me that sheers ( like curtain sheers) can be used as a cover as well, thoughts on any of this would be a great help! Thanks!

I use wire hoops, that originally came with a small hooped plastic covered greenhouse, to keep them up and I bury the edges and ends with soil. I swear by them to keep the bugs and cabbage worms off' I usually use them for two crops, the ones that I plant in May and the ones I plant in August. August ones (plant seed about 25 june then plant out) give supurb crops with no poisons used.
