I just started gardening this year. My husband made a compost bin for me. When I open the lid there are a lot of little flies. How can I get rid of them? Should I stop putting fruit and vegetable scraps in it? I do not put any animal products. Thanks Flora

I assume your bin is outside? The little flies sound like fruit flies, they are normal. They should disappear once your scraps start decomposing more. Maybe try stirring it up everytime you add new stuff, and try adding more brown items (like leaves, paper).
