How do I know what bulbs (type ) to dig up in the fall and which to leave in the ground. We are in climate zone 5b - 6a.

Tulips, Daffodils, Hyacinth, Allium & Lilies are hardy and can stay in the ground. Gladiolus, Dahlias, Canna, Callie should be dug up fand stored for the winter. Any other bulbs you should do a quick interenet search to determine zones. When you buy the bulbs from the Veseys catalogue they have the zones listed. It is always a good idea to make notes before you plant. Hope this helps!

I planted daffodils two years ago(2009),after they flowered in spring (2010)I left them in the ground and in fall I covered the spot with leaves and cut grass to protect bulbs against colds in winter but not all of them came back in the next spring(2011). My zone is 5b by the way. Please help, thank you.

Daffodils are extremely hardy and normally don't need extra protection. Check the moisture level of the soil and the drainage. It is possible that they are too wet. Dig up the bulbs to inspect them to be sure thay havent rotted. I would avoid using grass clippings because thay are high in nitrogen and too much nitrogen helps grow healthy foliage but at the expense of inhibiting bloom. Not that one season of grass clippings would do that but it is a possibility.
