Then in the spring, just as everything is beginning to bud out, I prune off whatever looks dead and has no new growth sprouting from it. This is not what most of the books tell you to do, but it is what my mother has done for years and it is what I have done for the past 6 years, and our gardens are filled with beautiful roses.
