Gardeners’ Forum: “Strawberries...to late to plant?”
Back to Gardeners’ ForumStrawberries...to late to plant?
Posted by Jennifer on Thursday, September 2, 2010 2:19 PM ADTEarlier this year, I purchased 40 everbearing strawberry roots from Vesey's through a fundraiser in my area. I have just recently received my order, due to circumstances beyond both mine and the coordinator's control. What I'm wondering is if they are still viable, now at the beginning of September. They are in their original packaging. Any chance they'll either A)take in the spring if I plant them now, or, B)hold out over the winter and still be viable to plant come spring? This is my first experience with strawberries, so any help/suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!

With strawberries you have to get the roots working before the ground freezes that is why you only water for a few weeks. If you are in a warmer area where the ground starts to freeze in November or December then there should be no problems.
