  • Help with a Variegated Weigela

Posted by Denise Molnar on Monday, May 19, 2003 11:55 AM ADT

I have a 2 year old variegated weigela. The first year that I planted it, it had pretty blooms on it. Last year I had to prune it back because the leaves were not coming back as vigorously. This year I am having the same problem. Am I doing something wrong or is it perhaps not planted in the right place. It is planted in full sun and well drained soil? Help!!

I have a weigela also and have never had any problems. Mine is planted in full sun in the n/w side of my house. Every year in early spring I top dress it with sheep manure and after it finishes blooming, I prune it back no more than a 1/3. Some years I don't prune at all. Have you had any problems with the severe winter weather on anything else as you may be suffering from dieback?! I hope any of this will help you or perhaps you could locate a gardening center to help you out. Good Luck

I have several 5 year old plants along the front of a raised deck. They are getting very woody and sparse at the bottom, can I cut them back to the ground.
