I have a Holly bush I bought a few years back. I didn't know that we need boy and girl plant to have berries. So, now I have purchased one of each. How far apart can they be for them to bloom? My first one, Not sure if it's a boy or girl, is a good 15 feet from where I plan to put the other two. Will this be to far? Or can I expect my first one to bloom sometime?

Thirteen years ago, as a housewarming present, my mom got me two holly bushes, one male, one female. I planted them as foundation plants under an overhang of the house (typical raised ranch), four feet apart. One produces berries every year just fine. However, I have to supplementally water the one closest to the steps as the overhang protects it from most rain. Lesson learned: hollies need adequate moisture, planting under an overhang doesn't work too well. You will be perpetually trimming to keep them within the bounds of the overhang. Also, my nursery people tell me that foundations leach out some. Hollies need acid soil and do not appreciate the alkaline leaching of a foundation. Both would look healthier if I had planted out in the open (a little shade doesn't hurt), nowhere near a foundation and just supplemented with acid fertilizer. And I could have just let them rip, no trimming involved.

I had a beautiful holly bush but the deer ate all the tips of the branches so I have a bare holly bush now. My husband wants to remove it but I was wondering if they will come back, there is a few green leaves around the bottom of the bush. Help?

I have several volunteer holly plants. This year I actually have some berries on one of them! Now my husband thinks I should plant them closer together. They are about 30 feet apart and are all in very shady spots. From previous posts it looks like sunny spot best, and not close the the house and its foundation. Is this correct? Also, how deep is the root most likely to be on a 3' tall plant?

I have three holly bushes. They are planted under a crabapple tree. They seem to be doing fine. Last spring I put some pine needles under them becaause I know they are acid loving plants. I plan on doing the same this fall. One plant has some red berries while the other two have none. During the summer I did notice that the one that had berries lost alot of the berries. My question is this sould I be trimming back these plants for the winter?
