Posted by Pauline Beaulieu on Saturday, July 29, 2006 5:07 pm ADTMe again! Here in Northen NB where I live next to the Saint John, my husband and I canoe often. On our last trip out, we noticed that there was Datura growing on the south facing side of the river bank. About 9 different stands of it altogether, and it is beautiful. I never knew that Datura grew wild prennially north of the southern US. Obviously I am wrong because it is growing here. The next time we are in the canoe, I will bring my camera and get a picture. There is none growing on the North facing side of the river, and I suppose it likes the sun and heat the south side affords it. Has anyone else seen white datura growing in the wild?

Posted by Sharon on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 8:31 am ADTGood morning: I live in southern ontario, they are like a weed here, they like it hot, and they drop their little seeds, and everyone grows, my friend has them in her garden and they take over everything, I think they also come in pink??????It's lovely to talk to gardeners, from all over Canada.

Posted by Pauline on Wednesday, August 9, 2006 6:45 pm ADTHi Sharon! I know it is very nice to talk to gardeners from Ontario and other places! I am so glad that you responded because I know what I saw was trumpet (Datura) flower. So they grow like anything in southern Ontario, well, with the warmer temperatures, and being right here by the Saint John River, I think that a lot of flowers not normally seen here are popping up little by little. Awesome. They are so beautiful in the wild. Hopefully this weekend I can get a photo! Take care Sharon!

Posted by Emile on Sunday, April 1, 2007 6:00 pm ADTAnyone know where I can get the purple and yellow varieties of the Datura? I have the white ones, and they just self-seed like crazy; there's nothing to do with them except remove the dead stocks in spring, and let the seeds rest on the ground. I want to start sections of purple and yellow. Do they self-seed like the white ones?

Posted by Cheryl on Friday, July 6, 2007 1:30 pm ADTI bought a cultivated trumpet flower from the garden centre to put in my balcony box. However, I noticed a similar looking plant growing among the conrete sidewalk at the GO Train station in Brampton, NW of Toronto. It looked so similar to the one I had at home that I had to park and take a closer look. The flowers haven't opened as of yet but just comparing the leaves, I think it is a wild version of the Trumpet Flower. Also to the touch, they have a very unpleasant lingering odor.

Posted by Karin Cassie on Friday, August 17, 2007 5:02 pm ADTWe live slightly east of Winnipeg, Manitoba. These Datura plants or Angel Trumpets self seed to the point that they come up every year. Once the plant reaches maturity, the seed pod splits open, and there are hundreds of seeds left behind, especially since it's easier to remove the stalks in the spring.

Now, with fall upon us, can anyone tell me how to harvest the seeds? Several of our friends and family want them in their gardens next year. Thank you for any suggestions. Oh, ours are the purple ones, absolutely georgeous!

Posted by Wendy Stockley on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 2:09 pm ASTI have harvested the Trumpet Flower with success. I received the seeds at work from a co-worker two years ago. About mid February I planted the seeds indoors. A plant did come up and I transferred it to my outdoor garden in late spring. This year the plant is huge and still dropping seeds. I can't wait to see what next year is going to do. I would be interested in getting some of your purple seeds for my garden. I live in Ontario, Canada. I look forward to your reply. Wendy

Posted by Mary Barnes on Monday, January 7, 2008 11:40 pm ASTI live in Richfield, Minnesota (Minneapolis) I took seeds from a neighbor that lost her home to development,my seeds have produced many plants, much to our delight, since our neighbor who is now in her 80's, can still enjoy them. (She bought a home 3 blocks away) these plants were planted by her young children along their alley, many years ago. My family and I love the smell in the evening, and the beauty of the flowers.

Posted by Louise on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 3:56 pm ADTI recently purchased a white and a purple Ballerina variety of Datura at a garden centre (name?) in Leamington, Ontario. I'm not familiar with them. Once the blooms fell off, seed pods developed. I assume that I should remove them for other blossoms to develop. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Posted by Don workman on Friday, September 26, 2008 2:45 pm ADTWe grow the white datura from sedd every year . We were on safari in the Namibian Desert last year & saw large numbers of it in a dried up river bed. Our guide said it was introduced by monks at a monastery, & had become a real pest becuse the animals do not eat it!

Posted by Vivian Bertrand on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 2:53 pm ASTI live in the Ottawa area. Every year I have new datura plants come up as they have self seeded from the previous year. I have the white and a smaller flowered mauve datura. I have grown the double petal yellow and the double petal purple but they don`t seem to self seed the following year. They need the heat to germinate and usually start growing well once the heat is here to stay. There has been some years I have had to chop them down in order to clear my path that they have spilled over onto.

Posted by janis kacvinsky on Thursday, February 19, 2009 3:18 pm ASTI grow datura meteloides- evening fragrance in white, datura metel- double yellow and datura metel-purple ballerina in my greenhouse in northern wisconsin. My customers absolutely love them as all of you do. Please keep in mind that all parts of datura plants contain dangerous levels of poison and may be fatal if ingested or smoked!

Posted by Patti Smith on Thursday, April 16, 2009 11:02 pm ADTIf anyone has a picture of this plant I would appreciate it. I think I have it but not being a knowledgeable gardener I can't be sure. I know I love it though. The flower reminds me of a Cala Lily and mine is white.
