    What shade trees grow quickly in sandy soil (Zone 4a)? The lot where my mother lives had mostly sand as fill (approx. 6 ft. of it) when my parents built their house.

      Try a type of caragana, they do very well in dry sandy soil, but if you're not careful they can spread like wildfire.
