Information for Gardeners

Acidanthera

General Description:

Fragrant white flowers with maroon throats form along the apex of the stem. Upright foliage is green and lance-shaped. Best display when planted in groups of at least 5-7 plants.

Cultivation:

This plant requires a long growing season—up to 20 weeks—to reach blooming. In areas with shorter seasons, start indoors one month before the last frost in pots. Water regularly while in bloom. Cover surrounding soil with mulch if there is risk of early frost before flowers open. In autumn, lift and clean corms. Dry corms quickly to prevent rot. Dust with bulb dust to kill fungus or overwintering pests and store in sand at 15ºC for the winter.

Propagation:

Separate and replant bulblets that form around mother corm.

Pests & Disease:

Thrips.
