Cereus validus 'Columnar Cactus'
General Description:
Tree-like, columnar, branched cactus, native to Argentina where it can reach heights of 15-20 ft. Stems can grow to 5 inches in diameter (12 cm) with 4 to 8 ribs and 1 or occasionally 2 or 3 central spines; 5 to 7 radials. Indoors, size can be restricted by growing in small pot.
Cultivation:
Pot up in standard cactus potting mix. Place in full sun to part shade. Water moderately and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer during the summer months (June, July, and August). Water sparingly in winter.
Propagation:
From woody stem cuttings, allow cut surface to callous over before planting.
Pests & Disease:
Aphids, mealy bugs, powdery mildew, fungal leaf spot, stem and root rot if over watered.
