Zea mays

Annual

Grows like regular corn, except these plants have striking variegated foliage. Best direct seeded into the soil in late spring or early summer, once the soil warms up to 21°C (70°F). Plant seed 1/2 inch deep, thin youngs seedlings to 8-10 inches apart. A larger spacing will allow the plants to produce small cobs which are also ornamental, 4-5 inch cobs with dark ruby red kernels. Requires a long growing season for cob production. Plnts will begin to develop colour in the foliage after they reach 10-12 inches in height. Provide a full sun area with a rich and well drained soil. Wil demand extra fertilizer compared to other annuals.
