Barberry
Barberis thunbergii
Hardy in zones 4-8.
Grown for attractive foliage, which is deer resistant. Beware of sharp thorns when working with Barberry! Great as a hedge, barrier or specimen plant. Plant 1.5-4 feet apart depending on variety. Prefers moist, well-drained soil and provides best colour in full sun, but light shade is fine. Pruning is not necessary, but you can remove 1/3 of growth in spring or fall to reshape and stimulate new growth. Drought tolerant.
