- Start inside 8 weeks before planting out. Choose a shady or cool area when transplanting outdoors. If you can allow your pansy/viola plants to remain in your garden to rest during the hottest months, they will probably begin blooming again in the fall. Shearing the plants back when they start to set will encourage new growth. Deadheading will encourage more blooms.
