  • Monkshood

I just purchased a monkshood (aconitum). Prior to placing it in my garden, I found out that the ENTIRE plant is extremely poisonous - the packaging only stated the the buds should not be eaten. I have two small children and a dog, neither of which would eat anything in my garden, but am curious if it is only dangerous if ingested?

I have grown monkshood for over thirty years. Not once in all that time have I ever seen cats or dogs eating it. About children I can only say it all depends on how curious they are and how well they listen to your warning. When the plant blooms they attract a lot of bees and wasps and this usually keeps most people away. I suggest that you place them at the back of the bed because mine grow to six feet.

Believe me no one is goint to eat the poisonous plant because they are so bitter and bad tasting. I would not worry about it. A person or pet would have to ingest quite a bit. Monkshood are great plants enjoy them the kids and pets won't bother them.
