Gardeners’ Forum: “New Garden”

Posted by Paul Saulnier on Monday, April 16, 2001 9:36 am ADTThe backyard (formerly a forest of fallen trees) is now a semi-large clearing. I've had some success in starting a small garden but now I'm ready to begin a larger one. However I'm a little unsure as to what types of products to add to the soil. Some sand and peat I know will improve the rather clay type soil but what else? Any suggestions? In my first foray, I planted potatoes with an organic mix on advice from friends and family. The potatoes in the first year did wonders for breaking up the soil and it wasn't a bad crop. Any more help? Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried it yet, but I am going to. After all it is really cheap and readily available. Also you can use peatmoss, and compost. I used a lot of peat moss and some compost in my front flower beds 3 years ago when we moved into our new home. I think it helped quit a bit, averyone said my flowers were great.
