How do I know if a tomato is determinate ot indeterminate? I've bought "Jolly", which says it does better if th e vines are pruned. Does this means it's indeterminate and therefore needs support? When and where do you prune? Is this just pinching out the top of the plant before it hits the roofline? Thanks for the help.

If the description says "vines", it usually means indeterminate. Check on the package or back with the seed company. To prune a tomato plant means to cut it back by taking our suckers which grow between the main stem and the branches. I usuall leave two main stems grow up - more tomatopes but they could be smaller . I would never prune the growing tip during the fast growing season. It will limit a vine plant immediately. You can cut the growing tip 3-4 weeks before first fall frost to help the tomatoes on the vine to ripen before frost.
