If the package of seeds for anuals have the directions instructing you to start seeds indoors, do you necessarily have to do this. Can you put the seed directly in ground ?

In most cases, in Canada, the season is too short to direct seed outdoors -- so you have to start indoors to extend the season. For your area, try calling your local gardening centre. That's why you start indoors.

H Harvey was correct in stating our growing season in Canada is often too short to sow from seed outdoors. BUT, an important question I have is: What particular seed were you planning on sowing? I sow my wildflower garden outdoors, every year, and poppies, coreopsis, flax etc. sow well, directly in the ground :-) Usually package instructions state Indoor/Outdoor sowing if applicable. Happy Gardening!!
