  • Starting strawberry plants

Hi. This is my first year for a garden. I want to know if there is a way that I can start a strawberry plant myself, or do I have to buy one already started - at the garden center. If I can do it myself, HOW? Thanks in advance for any information.

Hi, You can start strawberry seeds your self. Seeds can be ordered from Vesey's and you'll find planting intructions in their catalog. Here are the instructions. The seeds should be sown on the surface of moist compost. The seeds should be covered with perlite and the trays covered with glass or polythene. The soil temperature should be maintained at 15-18 degrees celsius. this can be done by placing the trays in a very warm location or on bottom heat. Germination will take 3-4 weeks. Once it sprouts remove cover and place in full light. transplant about five weeks after germination in a low nutrient compost at temperatures of 12-15 degrees celsius and begin liquid feeding in 4-6 weeks with a balanced fertilizer. Flowering to the production of fruit is approximatly 4-5 weeks. Good Luck!
