The best time would be late August or into September. If that is not possible, then early in the spring as a second choice. In the fall, the plant has a chance to establish its roots and be all set to go in the spring. If in the spring, the plant may not flower, such as a bleeding-heart, which flowers very early in the season, but late bloomers should be okay. One way might be, depending on your time,to make sure early bloomers are done in the fall, and later bloomers done in the fall or following spring. Good digging and watch your back. A LONG-HANDLED SHOVEL IS A GOOD IDEA!!
