I have heard that some vegetables and flowers may be planted in fall for earlier harvest the next season.. I am wondering if anyone has more info regarding this. I live in zone 4.. just west of ottawa ont.

I have no experience with planting seeds in the fall. But that is how nature works when we are not around. It's worth a small try the first year. Garlic and onions, and of course flower bulbs, can be fall planted. It is a good idea to put a light covering of hay or leaves over the vegetable bulbs in case of a severe winter. With frost heaving, the bulbs could be exposed to sun's heat and then severe cold - that's not a good idea!

Here in Edmonton, I plant any self-seeding annual in the fall as well as spinach, carrots and broccoli. I sew the seeds thicker than one would in the spring and mulch with a thin layer of leaves. Broccoli is 'iffy' but everything else does well.
