I planted some blackberry canes about 3 years ago but have not got any berries off of them yet. They grew long canes last season but died over the winter. I have some nice plants growing now eith nice long vines on them . Will these vines that grew this year produce fruit next season.Do I have to do anything to them to keep them over winter Murray

Some cane plants are tip-layering which means they bend over and touch the earth to make new roots.New plants are formed from there. Some, such as raspberries, shoot from roots of existing plants. They come up the first season, have raspberries the second season and die. The canes should be removed after dying. The "everbearing" type of raspberry, such as "heritage", means it has two crops of berries, but not EVERBEARING, as the name suggests. The canes comes up the FIRST year and have berries. The second year, they have berries again, at the usual time of July, here in Montreal, then the canes die, and should be cut off. Good luck!!

I have beautiful blackberry plants, but the berries are very sour, why would this be and what can I do? Are my plants lacking something?
