Posted by Carla on Tuesday, September 18, 2001 11:09 am ADTI've heard that putting mothballs in the garden bed is supposed to be a good way to keep cats out. I've never actually tried it myself, but I'm starting to have the same problem, so I probably will next year!

Posted by Shirley on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 5:11 am ADTMy mom swears by mothballs, I used them this summer in my gardens and they do work - for cats. But you have to replace them after a rain or when they've been in the garden for a little while. They don't work for rabbits and possums (like I have here in BC)! Any ideas...

Posted by Sharon on Monday, March 3, 2003 2:27 am ASTHi, Please do not use pepper in your garden to ward off critters. It is absolutely cruel. Moth balls are very dangerous if you have children in your neighbourhood who may mistake them for candy. In our city we have bylaws about animals running loose. If after approaching the culprits' owners you have no luck, I would simply call the dog catcher and yes I am a dog owner and have been for over thirty years. I never allowed my dogs to encroach on other people's property. Some people think they can allow their cats to roam at will and they can make quite a mess not to mention the smell when they spray. An automatic motion sprayer of water works beautifully and does no more harm than getting them wet, but they don't like it. Also Lee Valley sells scat cat mats which work well. I have also had luck placing wooden skewers (from the grocery store) in the ground. I "plant" them close together and the cats can't manouevre around them and look elsewhere to deposit their "gift". Hope these suggestions are helpful to you and not harmful to the animals in your neighbourhood.
