When and how do I split and move hosta? How do I know when it is time to move them?

There are two schools of thought on this one. Some say Autumn is the best time to divide hostas... others believe that job is best left until Spring. I've had equal success at both times of year. As far as the actual division goes...be as brutal as you dare...hostas (in fact, most perennials) can tolerate plenty of rough handling! I simply drive a sharp spade through the middle of the clump, dig out the severed section or sections and relocate it/them to another part of the garden. Remember to add some new soil to the hole left behind and water the new hosta site well after planting. Happy Gardening!!!

Walt, At last, the answer I have been waiting for. I will try your fall method, since the fall is upon us. Again, thanks for your speedy answer! Janet
