Do the plants need to die before digging up for winter storage??

I believe it is best to wait until the plant dies back a little. I waited until the leaves on mine started to turn then I dig up the tubers.

Saving your prize daliahs for use again next year is quite simple. After a good hard frost, dig up the tubers, cut off the wilted tops, shake or rinse off as much soil as possible and set on the deck to dry in the autumn sunshine for a day or two. A light dusting of bulb dust should keep diseases in check over the winter months. Store in a dry/cool corner of the basement in a box filled with dry sawdust or peatmoss. Ensure there is a bit of separation between the tubers in the packing, that way if one goes bad, they don't all go bad! Check from time to time to see if everything's okay. Don't forget to pot 'em up early in March and bring them into the light to get a headstart on your next summer of blooms! Good luck and Happy Gardening!!
