Posted by Jocelyne Lauzon on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 3:35 pm ASTI would like to know what I did wrong. Last summer I planted about 30 sunflower seeds, they look great all summer, nice big flowers. I never got any seeds, sometimes in september the flowers started to tilt down and they all died on me. I want to start over again this summer but with a better results this time. Any idea? Thank you for your time..

They are heavy feeders. My gardens look great in the spring and early summer then when it starts to get dry I have trouble keeping mine moist enough to be as florishing as in the spring. Do you mulch? I know that there is a mildew that will come if the season is too wet and one that comes if it is too dry. Our summers have been very dry in Nova Scotia where I live . I love sunflowers they are so cheery . Let me know how you make out ,as others help you with info on sunflowers,if you want to.Happy gardening!

Its normal for sunflowers to die off after they flower, especially the single headed types. They just bloom and then die. If they seemed to die prematurely, you may have gotten a fungus disease that is carried in your soil. It is important not to plant sunflowers in the same area two years in a row.
