My Mom has had a Christmas cactus for 40 years, in the bedroom I had at home(cool in the room, upstairs) and it always blooms at Christmas. I'm not sure what she does to keep it so well ,but what it is ,it is working nicely. Now her Thanksgiving Cactus, that is a different story.. The leaves are going light green, pink, to white and some are shriveling and now finally dying. Would this be too warm, too much water? Both these plants are in south windows . The Thanksgiving cactus is in the diningroom, downstairs. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks

Your thanksgiving cactus sounds like you are overwatering. Remember it is a succulent and does not require watering all the time. When you water, water well, draining any extra water from the pot. Let it soak for 15 minutes then drain. Let the plant dry to the touch and do the watering process again. It should not get a direct sunlight from you south window. It should be diffused light or the plant should be away from the window out of the sun's rays. good luck

I live in Ottawa and last year in early June I put my 3 year old Thanksgiving Cactus--which had never bloomed--outside in the garden which has a northern exposure and only receives sunlight in the late afternoon. The plant got watered when it rained. To my delight,in early Octobber buds began to form and I left it outside until we had 2-3 cool nights (1 to -1 degrees Celcius), usually in late October. I brought it into the house where it had indirect light from the north-facing window. It bloomed profusely until the end of November. I repeated the process again this year with excellent results--
