  • plants think it is Spring. Help!

Posted by Louise on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 3:38 pm AST

We moved to zone 6b at the end of november and I potted up many plants as I didn't want to leave them behind. Though we are theoretically in zone 6b, we are also in Carolinian Forest and in a microclimate near Lake Erie which makes it even warmer than that zone. Now, because of the very warm weather lately, the snow has melted off the pots and the plants are behaving at if it is spring. The soil is no longer frozen (it never really was, actually) and I am wondering if I should put them in the ground or leave well enough alone. It is predicted the weather will turn colder again but I course no one is really sure. What should I do? Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

If your bulbs, tricked by a late winter thaw, start poking their tips up only ot have a blizard of snow dumped on them, dont worry. The cold and ice returns them to the dormant state until warmer weather settles in. Few blooms will be lost.

Hi If you plant them outside and buy some of the floating row covers, they should protect them unless it gets real freezing for a long period and can be left on indefinitely, the water goes thru them, they get the warmth from the sun and breathe. Joanie
