I am in zone 2a and I really need help with things that will grow here. I would like to plant flowering shrubs in my backyard this year witch faces south. Along with something that will grow up the side of my deck. Idealy I would like perennials so I can save money and have then come back every year. I hope someone can help me! Carla

Carla, your local garden centre is your key source for information on specific plants best suited for your particular growing area. Having said that, might I suggest any of the spireas...the shirobana is my personal favourite. Its multi-coloured blooms make it an attractive mid-size plant for the shrub border. A couple of other flowering shrubs you might consider...hydrangea, potentilla, and weigelia. Any of the hardy Explorer-type roses should thrive in your garden if cared for properly. Most perennials will require extra winter protection in your area, especially if there isn't enough snow cover. I'm a graduate of the "TRY ANYTHING ONCE SCHOOL OF GARDENING". If it works it works, if not, try something different! Good Luck and Good Gardening!
