Gardeners’ Forum: “Germinating Geraniums”

Posted by Dawn on Wednesday, January 24, 2001 12:00 am ASTI was hoping someone might have experience in germinating annual geraniums. I recently bought a package of seeds, and have carefully followed the instructions. (keep seed warm with bottom heat & darkness) Germination is supposed to occur in 4-5 days, and I have had no results after a week and a half. Any advice would be appreciated!
re: Germinating Geraniums
Posted by Jane on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 12:00 am ASTI started my geranium seeds back a couple of weeks ago and they have all germinated and starting to get their true leaves. I bought peat pellets this year (never did in the past though). I soaked the peats in warm water with "no damp" added to the water. I placed the pellets in a plastic tupperware dish with a cover and set it on top of my refrigerator in complete darkness. All seeds germinated in about 7 days. The only thing I can think that may have happened is that you did not water them again after setting them up. I usually water about 3-4 days after I set up the seeds with a little warm water with "no damp" added again to the water. Any stubborn plants usually sprout after that second watering. I hope you did not plant them too deep. Just barely cover with soilless mix. Other than that I can't see where you have a problem - they are normally very easy to start from seed. Maybe you had them too hot - that can cause damage also - I just give the heat from the top of the refrigerator. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Posted by Dawn on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 12:00 am ASTThanks for your advice. I didn't plant them too deep, & I also watered them afterwards. Maybe I had them too hot? Vesey's was very nice & is sending me a new package to try. Maybe i'll invest in some of those peat pellets! Thanks again!
