  I received a gift of a beautiful amaryillis and in the last months it had large flowers. Now that the leaves are growing and the flowers are gone...how do I plant this large bulb out side in the garden. Thank you for you help. Sincerely.

    I have four amaryillis. I just put them out side after risk of frost. I leave them in the pots and just dig a hole and put in the pot. They go in a shady spot. They look nice around the pond.

    I have tried saving these bulbs and carefully nurtured them all summer,dug up in the fall & re-planted. The results were poor. Leaves and only one of about 12 bulbs flowered. If you like the look of leaves only, that's fine but I wouldn't bother again. Good Luck!

    Hi, I hope you haven't thrown out your amaryillis bulbs yet. The method which I have success with is as follows. When the flower is spent cut the stem back to about two inches. Continue watering and feeding and once the chance of frost has passed plant the bulb STILL IN THE POT right into the garden covering the pot right up and over the rim with soil. Keeping the bulb in the pot contains the roots and prevents damage to them when dug up. I place in a sunny to partially sunny area. I water and feed all summer. Before the first frost dig up the pots of amaryillis (the leaves my already be yellow) and cut back leaves. Place the pots in a cool dark location (basement) and do not water. This is the important resting period for the bulb. In late October I repot in fresh soil and if the roots have really grown I may go up a pot size - remember they need to be pot bound. They should be planted about halfway into the soil. Begin watering and feeding. Place in a sunny location and you will be amply rewarded. I once read an article where a gardener had a bulb for over thirty years! I should be so lucky.

    I have two amaryillis plants. One bloomed right away, and when the blooms died, I cut the stem off. Now the leaves are dying too. The other plant has leaves that are dying now, but it has never bloomed. Please tell me what to do. These are house plats.
