Gardeners’ Forum: “growing hibiscus from seed”
Back to Gardeners’ Forumgrowing hibiscus from seed
Posted by Anna on Sunday, April 29, 2007 4:58 pm ADTMy father gave me some seeds - don't know what they're called but he said the flowers are big, pink and perennial. I planted them in little pots about 3 weeks ago, covered with plastic and waited. Now, something is happening. There are 4 different "things" that have spouted and I don't know what the heck they are. One "thing" has 2 roundish leaves; another is sort of grassy looking; another has 2 leaves that are long and slender and the last "thing", which I think is the hibiscus, has a thicker stem with what appears to be one leaf. Does anyone know what a germinated hisiscus seed "should" look like?

As the plant grows the "true leaves" will appear. Hibiscus leaves grow alternately on the stem (as opposed to "opposite" or across from each other). The leaves are palmate and "toothed"... having jagged edges. Therefore look for the seedling that has two small rounded leaves, then one single leaf with a slightly toothed edge. The grassy looking seedling is probably a weed. I would wait on the other seedlings before pulling them out. Look for the "true leaves" instead of the two "seed leaves" to help identify the hibiscus.
