Posted by Sherry on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 12:57 pm ADTI have started Sweetpeas, Oriental Poppies, Basil and Lavender indoors. When can I put them outside? I will be putting them in containers, I live in an apartment, and have a top floor north/west facing balcony. It's May 8th and I'm in Edmonton.

If its over 10C during the day you can start harding them off by putting them out during the day and bring them back in during the night. I'd wait on leaving them outside all te time until the night temps get to approx 10C.

Also watch the wind, if your plants are too small they could break, or they could go flying off your balcony (I've had it happen)

Posted by Leanne on Thursday, May 24, 2007 11:15 am ADTSweet peas don't need to be started inside. They're very tough. I stick mine in containers as soon as the ground outside can be worked. I planted them (in Calgary) just after the Easter weekend this year. They're about 3 inches tall and very healthy. Apparently they like a cold start. I've grown them this way for years, and always have truck-loads of blooms! Since you've started them inside, though, I'd probably wait until after the last frost to be on the safe side. Definitely wait with the basil ... it shrivels very fast if it gets cold! Good luck!
