where is the best place to grow asparagus. I tried in a semi shady area of my lot that has evergreens nearby. They did ok the first and second year but did not come back this year. Is it the evergreens and poor location? or is it the poor soil? I did not put mulch down before planting. I was told that sandy soil is what they perferr. brian

I have a large asparagus plant on my land which has been here for 30+ years. It is in a very wet spot near the highway in full sun. I haven't done a thing to it since I have lived here{17 years}, and it grows great every year. Maybe the wetness is the secret.

Brian,First of all Asparagus Likes full sun,add compost twice a year, good drainage and once it comes up add some mulch to keep the soil moist...Hope this was helpful

If asparagus needs to be wet, then perhaps that's why my bed isn't doing so well. I thought it was just getting too old (it could be 30 years old). I have heavy soil but that has never been a problem in the past.
