Posted by Deborah Nixon on Saturday, June 2, 2007 10:53 am ADTI have just received my spirea hedge plants and I am unsure how deep to plant them. They have root on the end of the plant but about 1 1/2 feet from the base there is more root material . How deep do I plant them?

Water well for a month or so and even trim the upper branches if there are blooms on them. Not too much or you might shock the whole plant, but they are easy to grow here and mine always send out new growth at the base of the shrub. After they finish flowering in spring, I prune them and they always bloom a second time in late summer. For hedges, you can hard prune out all the old branches and trim them back, usually with some success. Watch for new growth to emerge next year, if yours have a healthy root system they should do well.
