Posted by tina on Thursday, October 4, 2007 10:47 pm ADT

I had a Hydrangia for about 3 years. This year there was no flowers. Last year when it come around to late ...late Fall I pruned them, so I can get them to flower in the next year. The only thing it did this year was grow big, but with no flowers......so I all I have is big beautiful leaves but no......flowers!...what a big disapointment! What did I do wrong? Did I prune the the wrong way...not at the right bud (before the right bud)? I know that I pruned away the old dried up sticks....maybe that could have been the problem? Please Help!!!

I have found that if I leave the bush alone until the spring can prune the dead wood at that time and I have beautiful fkowers every year well into October. Hope this helps.

Time to prune, depends on the species. The Peegee and Hills of snow hydrangea can be done in early spring, before the new growth starts. This will encourage small blooms on all current new growth. Cut them back to about 24 inches. If you want very large clusters, leave some longer branches from the previous year, and only trim some of them back to about 8-10 inches. Leave at least 2 buds on the longer stems. Its best to do some pruning right after they are done blooming. Then in spring you can do a quick thinning or shaping, without taking off all the buds.
