The most shade tolerant are those that are grown for their leaves, such as lettuce. Lettuce can actually do better with some summer shade. Next come the root vegetables, such as carrots, radishes and beets. They will do fine with 5-6 hours of full sun. The most sun thirsty are the tomatoes, squashes, melons, cukes etc. that are growing fruit....They will defintely not produce properly without a full days sun. But 5-6 hours would be substantial, so you should get some fruit.

I plant my winter squash in a row in the shaded area, and plant spinach and Swiss chard in a row extending at a right-angle to the squash row. When the chard and spinach are done, then I simply carefully move the beginning squash vines out to the sunnier part of the garden (where the chard and spinach used to be). The base of the squash plants can be shaded, as long as the vine with the developing squash has a chance to roam in the sun. Easy!
