Remove a few inches of soil from the bulbed area, lay out the wire mesh, and bury it with the soil. The squirrels won't be able to dig up the bulbs, yet the plants will make their way through the mesh just fine.

Posted by Howard Harvey on Saturday, May 3, 2008 2:29 pm ADTThe one and only final solution is to trap them in a humane trap ( Havahart is one type) and take them far enough away so they don't return. I have heard of marking them with water-soluable spray paint to make sure of this. Peanut butter on bread is sure-fire bait. I have transported close to 200 squirrels since 1981. It is not necessary to trap every year once the numbers are down. For example, last year, after several years of not trapping, I took away 29 !!!! It's the only way.
