  • winterizing geraniums

I am trying the brown bag method for the first time. (Uproot plant; shake all the dirt from roots; let rest in the garage for 3 days; pick off dead leaves; and store in brown bags or a box until Feb) There are still some green leaves after a couple of weeks. I have not put them in the brown bag/box yet. Should I wait until they are all dead before proceeding? Do I cut the plant right back before storing?

I cut them back shake off dirt and throw them under the bench in the greenhouse. its dark and cool. feb or march when I get time I plant in containers. some people have suggested hanging them up sidedown but I thought it a waist of time. when spring comes I give them to the nursing home. Bea

I tried winterizing my geraniums last year and they didn't grow in the spring. I used the method as described above but the stocks were black inside and didn't grow. What did I do wrong??? Would like to try again this year.

Are they hardy geraniums or annuals?

I'm not sure if they were hardy or annuals, I purchased them at a garden centre, I assume you are telling me this method will only work with hardy geraniums. I will take more care in my purchases this spring. thank you.

Has anyone had any success growing geraniums from leaves? I haven't had much success with rooting stem cuttings (I will try a few other things as time goes on) but when I stuck some leaves in the soil as well they DID root. So I potted them up. Will these grow to be geraniums or remain single leaves?

I pplant geraniums in Sept.. They do beautifully until mid to late June. Then they "dry up". How can I preserve them over July and August- our dog days? I plant in a planter box roughly 20-25 plants not individual pots.

I have about 50 geraniums that I carry over and I've found if I store them in old fertilizer, soil, potting mix bags and store in my furnace room I may loss 2 or 3. In mid March I cut back and pot them up.I bag them to colour so I may have 5 in one bag and 20 in another. Bill

I removed geraniums from the ground and planted them in flower boxes for the winter. They are in a east/south window in a bldg @ about 63 degrees. I did not trim them back when I removed them hearing you should do that it Feb.. Some are blooming and bushy. Should I trim them back now so they won't be so scrawny when I want to replant them in the Spring? Thank you, Marly

Regarding hardy vs annual geraniums... Hardy geraniums are perennials that do not need to be brought in over the winter; a mulch to protect them is plenty. Annual geraniums do need to come in though if you want to keep them from year to year. Zonal geraniums are annual (it should say on the tag).

This is my third year for growning geraniums over the witner. I left them in same pot that they were growing in outside. I usally set the plant in semi-shade for two weeks so it will used to being a dimmer sunlight. Then I set the plant in the west window to get the bright sunlight when it shines on that side of the house. I will give it water once a week. It grows and blooms like crazy. Then come spring after frost, I will set it outside on the porch on the east side of the house for two weeks and then into direct sunlight all day long. Keeping it watered when necessary and giving it plant food once a month. It has grown a foot tall and giving out blooms like crazy. I think I must be doing something right.

I had very lge. geraniums in an 18" oval container about 8" deep. Vancouver BC Cut right back to soil level, maintained them in soil and a bright daylight are in the house, watered only twice through winter and they grew up huge and beautiful this summer Will repeat again and see if just lucky?
